THE ETHICS OF WHINING
"I'M SCREWED", "I'M DEAD", the human moan and suchlike must be one of the top few noises issuing from people's mouths in the world. We hear it everyday, HecK, we use it all the time. When we fall into bad luck we f- this and f- that, we blame God, the weather, and sometimes even our dogs. And we do it because it's comfortable, easy and cheap. We all love to wallow in self-pity: we carave the attention and care of our friends, family etc. In short, we are sympathy druggies.
I'm notsaying that whining is completely useless. Whining has its place in the range of emotional expression. It is the ultimate expression of the human desire to bitch about stuff without irreparable consequences. It is that tempting prospect of having people fawn over you. But most of all it is one's cry about what one considers to be unfair (and uncontrollable) cirumstances that has landed you in a mud pit. Whining apportions blame to the unknown "Other", so you get off scot-free. See?
Whining once in a while about how life sucks is acceptable. It helps us to feel good for awhile, comforts our bruised egos, hearts etc. and sometimes it helps us to get back on our feet. But when whining becomes excessive it's just downright irritating. I know you've seen the sort, and unfortunately L have to say that bloggers are prime offenders. The invention of the humble blog has virually spawned millions of narratives across the Internet: someone complaining about work, the Significant Other. bad luck and so on day after day. Or you've had That Friend (or you could be That Friend...without even realizing it!) That everyone wants to avoid, because they're like mosquitoes. They never say die, these emotional hypochondriacs.
Hasn't anyone thought about the ethics of whining? Do people know what it means to be clinically depressed? The word "depressed" has become so fashionable now among whiners, it loses its original meaning...please remember that it was created for those poor sods who really ARE having problems. At some point self-pity has to stop. Continuous self-pity is self-destructive: one fixates oneself on the problem, and ignores possible solutions. I say that excessive whining should be banned. Whiners are a pain on the eyes and the ears.
And life sucks. It's a fact of life. Get used to it. Remember what your mother told you?? Empty vessels make the most noise. Now you SEE she was talking something.
